As a Buddhist resource centre, the Buddhist Library has a print collection of over 15 000 volumes, mainly in English and Chinese. Working with a unique classification and cataloguing system, it aims to make the subject matter easily accessible both to the scholar and the novice. The centre offers a quiet room for study and research.
Presently, it has grown to become more than just a specialised library. It is also a place where all who are interested in Buddhist practice come to study, meditate, and learn to apply traditional Buddhist values to contemporary needs.
Study
Study forms the foundation of Buddhist practice by establishing proper understanding and provides a framework for a holistic appreciation of Buddhism.
The Buddhist Library offers a variety of classes on Buddhist studies. Conducted in either English or Chinese, the classes are targeted from a general audience to advanced students of Buddhism. Discovering Buddhism serves as a general introduction while Bachelor of Arts in Buddhist Studies, Postgraduate Diploma in Fundamental Buddhist Studies and Master of Arts in Buddist Studies provide avenues for individuals who wish to have a more indepth understanding of Buddhism. There are also regular Sunday classes for children. The library has an auditorium with seating for 100 and a seminar room for 30.
The Library houses an art gallery which displays a collection of contemporary Buddhist paintings, prints and sculpture. It hopes to encourage an awareness and appreciation of Buddhist influence in art and life.
Meditation
Meditation is an integral part of Buddhist practice as it transforms intellectual understanding gathered in the course of study into spiritual insight.
Meditation classes are held throughout the year. Some of these courses are conducted by renowned meditation masters. Retreats are organised regularly to allow for more intensive and focused practice.
Devotional Services
Dovotional Services [or Pujas] are held regularly on Sunday mornings, and on new-moon and full-moon evenngs. Ritual devotional practices refine the emotions and integrate the heart with the intellect. They also help generate devotional energy to maintain one’s commitment to practice.Traditional Buddhist festivals such as Vesak, Ullambana and Kathina, are also celebrated. Services are conducted in English, Pali or Mandarin.
