Postgraduate Diploma Course in Fundamental Buddhist Studies

Overview

The Postgraduate Diploma Course in Fundamental Buddhist Studies is an external programme with the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies (University of Kelaniya), Sri Lanka. It is conducted by the Buddhist Library Graduate School (Singapore).

This is a one-year programme targeted at graduate students with little or no academic background in Buddhist studies. Buddhism is approached as an academic discipline suitable for Buddhists and non-Buddhists.

The programme will enable candidates to pursue further graduate courses leading to MA and PhD in Buddhist Studies.

Eligibility for Admission
Graduate students with a degree in any subject from a recognised university subject to approval from the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies of the University of Kelaniya.

Structure of Course
 The course is of the duration of one academic year. The academic year for 2012 will run from 7 February 2012 to 30 December 2012.

  • The course consists of 5 units:
    DBSX01 The Indian Religious Background and the Emergence of Buddhism
    DBSX02 Basic doctrines of early Buddhism
    DBSX03 Buddhist Social Philosophy
    DBSX04 Buddhist Culture: An Outline Study
    DBSX05 Dissertation
  • A candidate must complete all four units and the dissertation within an academic year before sitting for the examination.
  • Under extenuating circumstances, academic leave may be granted on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Faculty Board.
  • Candidates are required to attend at least 75% of all Lectures and Tutorials in order to qualify for the examinations leading to the Postgraduate Diploma in Fundamental Buddhist Studies.

Weekly Timetable

  •  For each week, there will be 4 hours of lectures.
  • The course will be conducted on Saturday afternoons and Tuesday nights.

Academic Calendar for Year 2010
The course for 2010 is divided into 2 terms, each term running a period of 15 weeks (30 formal contact hours per module).

Term 1
7 Feb 2012 - 22 May 2012 ( 15 weeks)
 
Academic Break 
23 May 2012- 6 August 2012 (11 weeks)

Term 2
7 August 2012 - 20 November 2012 (15 weeks)
 
Examination 
Tentatively 23 - 30 December 2010

Seminars and other programs will be conducted during the term break to allow greater exposure to and more focused studies on specific areas of Buddhist Studies.

A detailed schedule of the course will be made available to course candidates.

Course Fees
Registration Fee : $100.00
Tuition Fee : $800.00 for whole course
Examination Fee : S$630.00

  • Fees above are quoted in Singapore Dollars.
  • The Registration Fee is non-refundable.
  • Tuition Fees may be refunded only if the candidate's application is not approved by the Postgraduate Institute.
  • Examination Fee should be paid by 15 November 2012
  • Payment is to be made by cash or cheque. Please do not send cash by post.
